With Star Wars Episode VII The Force Awakens about to be released, we thought it would be interesting to continue with our pre-launch rankings by aggregating the online outer space movie rankings. Taken together, 2001 Space Odyssey takes the first place spot. Although Star Wars is second in the list, with Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope (1977) making 48% of the top fives for outer space movies that we found online, this is likely because the Star Wars votes were split between episodes 4 and 5. This is a long standing debate among Star Wars fans on which movie is the best Star Wars movie: New Hope or Empire Strikes back. Surprisingly, the only Star Wars movie from the prequel trilogy to make any top fives lists was Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999). It's hard to believe Episode I made the top movies list but not Episode III. The outer space genre includes space operas, space westerns and colonization movies, which we will cover in the coming weeks.
