Welcome to our Reel Fives
pre-launch movie rankings for the best dinosaur movies of all time. Our Reel
Fives team has found 38 published ranked lists of the top dinosaur movies
published online and ended up with 45 dinosaur movies that made the cut. For
each ranked list of greatest movies for the dinosaur movie genre we have taken
the top five ranked dinosaur films. The movie rankings on top dinosaur movies
are included at the bottom of this post and include rankings of the best movies
in the dinosaur film genre created by movie experts as well as dinosaur movie
rankings from polling sites, such as ranker.com.
Dinosaur movies are not easy to
make, which is why the ranking list of the top movies for this genre is
comparatively smaller than for our other pre-launch movie rankings such as our top zombie
movies,
top superhero
movies,
and top outer space
movies rankings.
Dinosaur movies, historically, have some fear-based elements, which in some way
may categorize some dinosaur films into the horror genre, as well a good versus
bad theme. The Jurassic Park series
dominates the dinosaur movie genre, with Jurassic
Park (1993) as the best dinosaur movie overall, based on the published
rankings. The Jurassic Park movies play off the fear based and good vs. bad
motifs. However, it should be noted that there is a clear difference between
animated and non-animated dinosaur films in this genre. In animated dinosaur
films, the good versus bad motif is present to teach children a lesson because
that is their target audience. In this way, dinosaur movies teach children to
do the right thing and are not as nuanced. In non-animated dinosaur films,
there is more nuance. Animated dinosaur films appear lower on our ranking list,
whereas non-animated dinosaur films rank higher, with the exception of Land Before Time (1988). The evolving technology
in the film industry is only going to make the impossible look more realistic. Jurassic World (2015) made $511.8
million at the box office. Because dinosaur movies like this are so profitable,
we expect to continue to see the film industry developing dinosaur movies.
We are not surprised that Jurassic Park (1993) is the top film
because it has set the standard for the genre. Jurassic Park (1993) made dinosaurs come to life and flowed like an
action movie. There were loud noises, some humor, and a hero, Dr. Alan Gant
(Sam Neil), to save the day. We also did not find the fact that Land Before Time (1988) is second in our
top dinosaur movies of all time rankings surprising given it spawned a
franchise, including a series of movies for children. The first film in this
influential franchise for the dinosaur movie genre proves to be the best film,
while the other movies in this franchise did not live up to the expectations of
the first one. King Kong (1933),
ranked as the 9th dinosaur movie, and comes as a bit of a surprise because it
is such a classic film. In our other rankings, classic films tend to be ranked
higher, but not in this case. We look forward to the dinosaur film genre
growing, as it has great potential due to the film industry’s advances in
technology. Hopefully plots for future films in the dinosaur movie genre will
improve too; few of the movies in the dinosaur movie rankings have a strong
plot. Many of the dinosaur movies in the genre went straight to DVD or video,
which may be a critique on the plot itself. We hope to see growth in the dinosaur
genre in terms of depth of plot and a more realistic portrayal of dinosaurs.
