Best Sports Comedies of All Time - Based on 130 Published Rankings

Scene from Caddyshack (1980), ranked  top sports comedy.

Welcome to our Reel Fives pre-launch movie rankings for best sport comedies of all-time. The rankings for sports comedies are based on our pre-launch rankings of best sports movies of all time  which captures sports movies more broadly. The movie rankings on top sport comedies are based on the 130 movie ranking sources we found for sports movies. In the list of sports movies there were 105 movies and of those, 23 movies were sport comedies- these 23 sport comedies are ranked below.  As with the broader sports genre, these sport comedies rankings are based on rankings created by movie experts as well as rankings from polling sites that were found online.

Sport comedies mix the trial and error of sports with comedic relief. Carl Spackler (Bill Murray) must get rid of the gopher destroying the golf course in Caddyshack (1980) so that the golf course can continue to serve rich people. Caddyshack (1980) is the all-time best sport comedy. However, the movie does not revolve around golf. Instead, the movie takes place at a golf course and revolves around the people who work and go there. Happy Gilmore (1996), ranked eleventh, is about an amateur golfer trying to save his grandma’s house. Happy Gilmore (Adam Sandler) yells at golf balls, fights with Bob Barker, and does not follow any of the conventions of golf. Sport comedies are largely about amateur sport players. White Men Can’t Jump (1992), tied for eighteenth, is about an amateur white basketball player who teams up with an amateur black basketball player to hustle other players for money. They do not seek to play in the NBA, only to make money on the street. Cool Runnings (1993), tied for ninth, showcases a bobsled team from Jamaica. After a star sprinter gets disqualified from running, he decides to create a bobsledding team and so begins the hilarious journey of the Jamaican bobsledding team. The Sandlot (1993), ranked second, is the tale of kids in a neighborhood baseball team who just want to win the game. The Bad News Bears (1976), ranked sixth, is about a coach who uses a youth baseball team to prove that he can win, even with a team with little natural talent.
