Blizzard Movies!

If you're on the east coast  there's a chance you're stuck at home waiting for the blizzard to slow down so you can get out and take in the frigid icy chaos. In the meantime, here are some blizzard appropriate flicks. They are all sci-fi or horror given these are really the two most appropriate genres to associate with a blizzard, no?  We're not just talking about movies that take place in the snow- we're talking about movies where snow is kicking ass  (sorry kiddos, no animated family friendly recommendations):

The Day After Tomorrow (2004)

This is definitely not the best movie in this list, but, this is definitely the best movie to watch during a blizzard. The entire plot revolves around surviving a global blizzard of epic proportions. Blizzard survival 101. Not great but definitely a production (budget of  $125 million) , decent acting (Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal), and entertaining.

 The Shining (1979)

Horror movie about cabin fever starring Jack Nicholson, directed by Stanley Kubrick, and based on a book by Stephen King.  All you need to know.

The Thing (1982)

Horror classic. Cult Classic. John Carpenter brings the audience to Antarctica where Kurt Russell tries to survive an encounter with a creepy alien parasite. Forget about the remake, although the special effects do date this movie. In terms of special effects and the gore factor think The Fly (1986) or The Howling (1981).

Dead Snow (2009) or Dead Snow 2:Red Vs. Dead (2014)

Both these Norwegian movies will please zombie fans, the first one being a cult classic. Its  your typical 'cabin' movie except with Nazi zombies inexplicably rising from the ground. For those of you who don't speak Norwegian, there are subtitles.

The Grey (2011)

This was a surprisingly awesome movie.  Lim Neeson's badassery  is A-1 in this plane survival flick. The plot revolves around a plane crash in a wolf infested frozen wilderness. If anything, this movie teaches us the importance of alpha status.

Frozen (2010)

Remember that horror movie where college kids make poor decisions that are obviously going to lead to bad things?  This is it. Two guys and a girl sneak in for one last run on the ski slopes after the park closes down.  They get stuck on the lift and forgotten. Now every time I'm on a lift I'm thinking about this movie.
