Best Dystopian Movies Based on 68 Expert Online Movie Rankings

Blade Runner (1982) first in dystopian film rankings, appearing in 51% of top fives.
Welcome to our Reel Fives best dystopian movie pre-launch rankings. Our Reel Fives team has found 68 published ranked lists of the top dystopian movies online and ended up with the 89 all-time greatest dystopian movies. For each ranked list of greatest movies for the dystopian genre, we have taken the top five ranked films. The movie rankings on top dystopian movies are included at the bottom of this post and include rankings of the best movies in the dystopian film genre created by movie experts as well as rankings from polling sites.

Dystopian films challenge the happily ever after trope in film by imagining a flawed world. Most dystopian films take an element of reality and exaggerate it. Whether the element is emotion (Blade Runner (1982)) or capitalism (Metropolis (1927)), dystopian films ask their audience to question basic assumptions about life itself. Are the “flaws” really that bad? Is technology taking society in the right direction? Dystopian films take place in the future, sometimes the year is given, sometimes it is assumed, depending on the movie. What the films bring is a new perspective to current problems. Our top three ranked films each tackle a flaw differently. Blade Runner (1982), ranked the all-time best dystopian film, delves into the power of human emotion. The film asks if humans can rid themselves of the irrationalities of emotion. Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) is supposed to track down the rebellious group and through that, he questions if artificial intelligence is really that great. Stanly Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange (1971) addresses the rising crime in a futuristic Britain and asks if criminals can truly be reformed and if so, how society will be affected. Fritz Lang’s Metropolis (1927) ponders the consequences of capitalism. Dystopian films imagine an exaggerated point to get their audiences to think about the problems they see, and not all the films have a happy ending.

Not all dystopian films use the same formula. Some films, like Wall-E (2007), use animation to appeal to not only adults, but also to children. Though Wall-E (2007) is less depressing than 1984 (1984), they both address falling in love in a hopeless world. This makes for a fascinating and engaging plot. Other dystopian films are book adaptations, such as A Clockwork Orange (1971), The Hunger Games (2012), and Fahrenheit 451 (1966). Producers work with their teams to bring these books to life, often to hungry fans who want to watch their favorite book come to life. However, not all dystopian films stay true to their dystopian novels and the producers may change things, such as the narrator, to create a better flowing film. By having variety, dystopian films continue to have intriguing plots.

The rankings have more variety in terms of when the movies were produced than other lists, and this makes for an interesting list to watch. Fritz Lang’s masterpiece Metropolis (1927) is still popular (ranked third) despite being a silent film and almost 90 years old. That shows the power and influence of Lang on the dystopian genre. His use of heavy machinery imagery is present in films such as the Hunger Games (2012), ranked number 10. Lang’s influence can also be seen in showing the grandiosity of power a state has, which is seen in 1984 (1984) and V for Vendetta  (2005), ranked number 7. We found the rankings to be what we expected, as the films that were critically acclaimed were also liked by audiences and took the top rankings. We also expect 2016 to be a great year for the dystopian genre with The Divergent Series: Allegiance, The Girl With All the Gifts, and Postscript all coming to theaters this year; we expect a few of these films to reinvent the genre as well as add depth.
