Best Chick Flicks of All Time - Based on 62 Published Sources

Scene from The Notebook (2004) ranked number one chick flick of all time.

Welcome to our Reel Fives pre-launch movie rankings for the best chick flicks movies of all time. After an extensive online search, we found 62 published rankings for chick flicks. Reel Fives has taken all of those rankings and aggregated them into definitive rankings for the top 118 chick flicks movies of all time. For each ranked list of top movies for the chick flicks film genre we found online, we have taken the top five ranked films. The original sources of rankings on top chick flicks movies are included at the bottom of this post and include rankings of the best chick flick movies created by movie experts as well as chick flicks movie rankings from polling sites.

Chick flicks are movies often revolving around romance targeted, as the name states, to women. Chick flicks differ from romantic comedies in that women play stronger characters than in other romance films. Strong women demand what they want and though love is important in all of the films, there is more to these films than just love. Consider the all-time best chick flick The Notebook (2004). The Notebook (2004) has what is considered one of the best on-screen kisses of all time; the kiss in the rain between Noah and Allie shows the unrequited love between the two even after seven years apart. The film shows the early stages of romance between teenagers and how circumstance tore them apart. Allie remained committed to Noah, but it was her mother who tried to keep them apart, until she could not. Mean Girls (2004), ranked second, revolves a high school clique. When new girl Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) falls for Plastic Regina George’s (Rachel McAdams) ex-boyfriend, she lands in uncharted territory. Cady decides to infiltrate the group and play by their rules to destroy the clique. Pretty Woman (1990), ranked third, plays with the rags to riches motif. Prostitute Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts) and businessman Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) fall for each other, but Vivian is skeptical of men because of her history with men. Vivian remains headstrong and stubborn throughout the whole film, even while she falls for Edward. Clueless (1995), ranked fourth, is another high school film revolving around high school cliques and popularity. Cher (Alicia Silverstone) wants to help Tai (Brittany Murphy) become popular and find a boyfriend, only to realize she wants a boyfriend too. Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961), ranked fifth, chronicles the life of hopeful, young Holly (Audrey Hepburn) who falls for Paul (George Peppard). However, Holly wants to do things her way. She has her own apartment and gets by best she can.

Love remains central in chick flicks and our rankings show that. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999), ranked sixth, is a classic high school love story. Kat Stratford (Julia Stiles) has no interest in dating Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger), but her sister Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) wants to date and she cannot until her older sister dates. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003), ranked ninth, is the traditional 2000s chick flick. Addie Anderson (Kate Hudson) goes out with Ben Barry (Matthew McConaughey) and both are on opposite missions. One wants to break up and the other wants to fall in love—all within ten days. This chick flick is the basis of chick flicks of the 2000s. Couples get together, then conflict, and then happily ever after. Legally Blond (2001), ranked tenth, follows Elle Woods to Harvard Law School to win back a boy. Instead she spites the boy through working hard in law school. She does find love along the way and solves a murder case. Bad boy Landon Carter (Shane West) falls for Christian girl Jamie Sullivan in A Walk to Remember (2002), ranked eleventh. Landon must participate in the school play and enlists Jamie for help. Jamie only has one condition, telling Landon that he has to promise to not fall in love with her. This heartbreaking love story shows the power of teenage love. Finally, Dirty Dancing (1987), ranked twelve, focuses on Baby (Jennifer Grey) a young teen at summer camp that falls for the dance instructor Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze). The film contains what is considered one of the best dance scenes in chick flick history. The chemistry between Johnny and Baby is strong and powerful.

The rankings surprised us with how many newer films made the top 10. Five of the ten films were made after 2000. Since the rankings have over 100 films, the list is extensive. A chick flick is not just made for women; it is made for all audiences. We would like to see some diversity in the films. All of the top ten films show Caucasian and heterosexual couples and that is not representative of all relationships.
