Scene from Wall-e (2008) ranked second robot movie of all time. |
Welcome to our Reel
Fives pre-launch movie rankings for the best robot
movies of all time. After an extensive online search we found 46 published
rankings for robot movies. Reel Fives has taken all of those rankings and
aggregated them into definitive rankings for the top 48 robot movies of all
time. For each ranked list of top movies for the robot film genre we found
online, we have taken the top five ranked robot films. The original sources of
rankings on top robot movies are included at the bottom of this post and
include rankings of the best robot movies created by movie experts as well as robot
movie rankings from polling sites, such as ranker.com.
Robot movies imagine a world where
artificial intelligence has the potential to rule the world—for better or for
worse. Blade Runner (1982), the
all-time best robot movie (also
top dystopian movie), questions what being human is. Can robots be human? Are
robots superior to humans? Blade Runner (1982)
and other robot movies ask these types of questions as way of analyzing
humanity from a distance. Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) is a robot cop in charge
of instilling order in Los Angeles by finding the superior robots, called
replicants, who committed gross crimes. In his journey, he ponders the above
questions. WALL-E (2008), ranked
second, also questions what being human is. Is the difference between human and
robot simply emotion? WALL-E (2008) questions
that notion as a robot falls for another robot. The Terminator (1984), ranked third, tests the limits of artificial
intelligence through sending Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) back in time to
kill a woman who will eventually give birth to a son that will be the cause of
war between humans and machines. The humans have also sent a protector and the
film becomes a test of superiority between humans and cyborgs. Robot films question
the limits of humanity and their own intelligence and ponder what it means to
be human. Though answers are seldom provided, robot films provoke these
important questions.
The robot genre also includes the
film series Star Wars and Star Trek, which include strong robot
supporting characters but where robots are not at the center of the story, thus
diversifying the genre. Star Wars:
Episode IV-A New Hope (1977), ranked fifth, features droids in their
attempt to rescue Princess Leia from Darth Vader. R2-D2 and C-3PO are central
to the plot line. Star Wars: Episode V -
The Empire Strikes Back (1980), tied for 20th and Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi
(1983), ranked 22nd, also appear on the list.
We found the rankings to be a great
mixture of old and new films and like the variety presented in the rankings.
From Metropolis (1927) to WALL-E (2008), the rankings showcased
the depth in the robot genre. We enjoyed that the rankings embraces the
classics and that newer movies rightfully got ranked. This is a trend we would
like to see in other genres. The robot genre has an ability to keep reinventing
itself and we cannot wait to see what the future will bring.
