Best Superhero Films: What 130 published online rankings say the top 5 superhero movies of all time are

Welcome to our Reel Fives pre-launch superhero movie rankings. After conducting research, our Reel Fives team has found 130 published superhero movie rankings (the publications with the top superhero movies ranked). For each ranked list of top superhero movies we have taken the five superhero movies they ranked as their top five. The 130 superhero movie rankings lists are included at the bottom of this post and include expert superhero movie rankings as well as user aggregated superhero movie rankings from sites like ranker.com. We will also post the Reel Fives pre-launch rankings superhero movie sub-genres for Marvel supehero movies, for DC superhero movies, and for animated superhero movies. Although Reel Fives' overall superhero movie rankings are based on the top movies through the aggregation from rankings of superhero movies we found, for the sub-genres we will use these same published rankings rather than, say, searching online for rankings lists on the specific sub-genres. We gave this latter approach consideration but came to the conclusion that we will get a much broader information base if we stick to using only 'broader' genre published movie rankings rather than ranking for each sub-genre separately. While we realize that some movie sub-genres have almost as large a number of rankings as the parent genre, for consistency we have stuck to only considering parent genre movie rankings this for all sub-genres. For example, there are many DC superhero movie rankings lists that are published online, possibly as many as there are for supehero movies in general. While this is a list of top superhero movies, the list below actually includes six movies since two movies are tied based on the 130 rankings sources, Sam Raimi's Spiderman (2004) and Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins (2008), tied for fifth place making the top five in 28.3 percent of our sources.

Percent of top fives in which superhero movies were included
The fact that DC and Marvel comic book-based superhero movies hold the top spots is not surprising. More interesting though is that when only looking at movies ranked in the top five, Marvel and DC are quite even, neither resoundingly appear to be favored by published movie rankings lists. DC superhero movies hold spots one, four, and five. Marvel superhero movies hold spots two, three, and five. This means that the average ranking, among the top five movies for both Marvel and DC superhero movies is exactly 3.3. However, taking the average percentages for the three superhero movies representing Marvel and DC places DC-based superhero movies slightly ahead. The average percent of lists for the top three DC superhero movies is 49% while that for Marvel superhero movies is 41%. No doubt this is driven by The Dark Knight (2008) being the outliar in the group, with presence in 83% of the top fives lists (see graph above). However, the disparity between DC's The Dark Knight (2008) with 83% presence and Marvel's The Avengers (2012) with 57% presence can in part be due to having some of the rankings take place after 2008 and prior to the release of The Avengers (2012). There is little we can say on how much this biases the numbers, however, since we (currently) do not have information on how superhero movie rankings lists that were published prior 2012 would place The Avengers (2012). In addition, there is the potential bias that Superman (1978), being by far the oldest movie, slipped due to the more recent movies having pulled viewers' attention.

All in all, given that the DC characters of Batman and Superman are more storied by virtue of being substantially older, the significance of the Dark Knight (2008) in being the first superhero movie ever to win an academy award for a high profile category (Heath Ledger best supporting actor in 2009), and the significance of Superman (1978) in single-highhandedly creating the modern superhero movie genre, it makes sense that DC has a slight advantage. We suspect that the upcoming release of Batman V Superman in 2016 will shake the rankings and possibly cement DC as having the top superhero films. It is worth noting, however, the lack of variation (and possibly potential) in DC-based superhero movies. While Marvel has put out several arguably successful franchises including the X-men, Sam Raimi's Spiderman, and Iron Man trilogies along with the backstory movies leading up to the Avengers, DC has almost purely relied on brilliant movies made for their top two superheros: Batman and Superman. For our overall discussion of the superhero genre see our sneak peek article here.

Sneak peek of Reel Fives' superhero pre-launch movie rankings (based on 130 published superhero movie rankings)

Scene from Superman and the Mole Men (1951)
The following discussion is regarding the top superhero movies of all time in the American sueprhero movie genre. This leaves off international superhero movies which might make the top superhero movies list, such as the Japanese superhero film Ogon Bat (1966).

The concept of the superhero is fairly young in contrast to some literary genres that are adapted to film, such as horror literature, which can be traced back to the 18th century. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the first use of the word “supehero” was in 1917.  Comic book superheros first appeared with the 1938 publication of the first issue of Action Comics, which introduced Superman.  During the 1940s there was a quick rise in popularity of superheros, followed by a very quick decline. By the early 1950s with the introduction of the Comics Code Authority (CCA), there was a decline in popularity accompanied by a creative censorship that may have limited comic book writers to put out publications that would appeal to a broader and more mature audience. During this early period, for the most part,  superheros only appeared in short films (film serials) that were played prior to feature length films in theaters. Only when stitched together would film serials' story lines be completed. For example, in 1948 there was a 15 part superhero series of shorts that together formed a story. Barring the early Dick Tracy movies, the first feature superhero movie is Superman and the Mole Men (1951) which essentially served as a pilot for the Adventures of Superman TV show that ran from 1952 to 1958. Another notable early superhero movie was Batman (1966). The tone of Batman (1966), viewed largely as parody, was a reflection of the post-CCA treatment of superheros. So, not surprisingly, no movies from this era of cinema made the top superhero movies of all time list, which we have determined using our top five rating system based on 130 published rankings.

Superman (1978) poster
Then in 1978, Superman showed the potential for the superhero films, which until then had not been taken seriously. It took the collaboration of several high profile and successful Hollywood people. This included writer Mario Puzo and Marlon Brando, who collaborated six years earlier in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather(1972), considered by many to be one of the top movies of all time.  Superman (1978) was directed by Richard Donner who had established his brand a couple of years earlier with the critically-acclaimed The Omen (1976).  Superman (1978) also included Gene Hackman who had won one Academy Award and been nominated for several additional Academy and Golden Globe awards in the years immediately preceding its release. Superman (1978) to a large extent also benefited from the commercial success of Star Wars: A New Hope (1977). Superman (1978) was a commercial and critical success, generating $300 million in theaters and earning three Academy Award nominations.

Source: Reel Fives own research
Ever since Superman (1978) there has been an overall increase in the production of superhero movies. However, overall we count roughly 138 live-action supehero movies (America) ever made (depending on which films are considered to fall under the genre).  This seems like a small number of movies given the popularity and commercial success of the genre.  In one of the genre's peak years, 2008, 10 superhero movies were released, and three of them (Dark Knight, Iron Man, Hancock) were in the top five highest grossing movies for the year. This limited number of movies in the genre is due to the large budget requirements for many comic book-based movies, as they often require special effects. Compare Green Lantern (2011) with a budget of $200 million to Moneyball (2011) released around the same time with a budget of $47 million, in spite of the latter having several Hollywood heavyweights including Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill and Aaron Sorkin.  Based on 130 published superhero movie rankings, here is the list of the top supehero movies that made the top five movies in at least one list.

Sneak peek of Reel Fives' zombie pre-launch movie rankings (based on almost 150 published lists)

This is a sneak peek of our pre-launch rankings of zombie film. We have collected information from almost 150 zombie movie rankings lists found online (as of today) and using our top five rating system to aggregate across them to identify the top zombie movies of all time.  While there is significant interest in the zombie genre and in identifying the top zombie movies of all time, as indicated by the substantial amount of rankings list of top zombie movies, the evolution of the zombie film genre makes it difficult.  For this reason, below, we provide a discussion the zombie film genre and below that a sneak peek via an UNRANKED list of the top zombie movies we have. In the coming days we will release our official pre-launch top five zombie movies as well as our pre-launch zombie movie rankings.

The genre of zombie film is one of the more complex existing film genres due to the evolution of the zombie concept.  One can try to give it identifying zombie and zombie film features such as living dead, consumption of human flesh, apocalyptic setting, and contagion, and find movies considered by some as zombie movies that don’t fit one or several of these expected characteristics. While there are many discussion on the topic of what constitutes a zombie movie, we take an all-encompassing approach and use the broadest definitions of the zombie and zombie movie concepts.  However, we are able to use stricter zombie definitions for our discussion and rankings of zombie movie sub-genres.

Victor Halperin’s White Zombie (1932) starring early horror titan Bela Lugosi is agreed by most people, experts and fans alike, to be the first feature length zombie film. The original concept of a zombie was borrowed from Haitian folklore. In French creole the word zonbi refers to an animated corpse revived using spiritual or magical means, such as by a witch or sorcerer. For a more extended discussion on the historical origins of the zombie concept we suggest reading the Zombie Myth chapter of Ethology of Zombies (2014) by Eugene Krivoruchko, found here. Starting with White Zombie (1932) movies applied their interpretation of this. However, in the decades following White Zombie (1932) the zombie archetype began to evolve. Generally zombies were mindless slow-moving humans that had risen from the dead or come under the control of some entity or person. For example, Ed Wood’s Plan 9  ties in a science fiction element in his film Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959)  in which aliens resurrect corpses and control them through the stimulation of pituitary and pineal glands in attempts to, eventually, destroy mankind. In a similar fashion, combining science fiction and zombies, Jerry Warren’s Teenage Zombies (1959) is about a mad scientist who is trying to take over the United States by transforming everyone into zombies.  Teenage Zombies (1959) complies with zombies being slow moving and under control but does not incorporate corpse reanimation or a supernatural element.

George Romero’s Night of the living dead (1968) pushed the envelope, redefined the zombie movie genre, and introduced the concept of the modern zombie. The vast influence Night of the living dead (1968) meant the end of classic zombie movies and the beginning of modern zombie movies.  In the documentary Doc of the Dead (2014) George Romero notes that he did not deliberately make a zombie movie with Night of the living dead (1968).  He went on to say that he thought of hordes of flesh-eating walking dead as ghouls and was largely influenced by Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel I am legend, which was more closely linked to vampirism. In this sense, George Romero created the modern zombie by combining the elements the classic zombie with vampires.  Two additional concepts that have been extremely influential in the zombie movie genre that were brought on by Romero’s Night of the living dead (1968) are the zombie apocalypse and the contagion aspect of becoming a zombie.  Modern zombie movies have added and subtracted elements from the Romero zombie archetype and universally, in some fashion, follow the Romero zombie myth.

One of the most influential zombie movies in the modern zombie genre is Dan O’Bannon’s The Return of the Living Dead (1985). The Return of the Living Dead (1985) introduced several zombie features that were departures from the Romero zombies and which are frequently used in zombie movies today. These include a returned emphasis on the scientific view by focusing on the contagion side and presenting zombism as a virus.  O’Bannon’s film’s departures also included zombies as infected humans rather than walking dead (reanimated corpses) and fast aggressive zombies in contrast to the slow moving mindless Romero zombies. For a discussion on The Return of the Living Dead’s contributions to the modern zombie genre we suggest reading Matthew Belinkie’s article on the topic in Overthinking.com, found here.

In appreciation for this complex genre here is our UNRANKED list of top zombie movies.  The movies below were all included in the top five zombie movies for at least one of the nearly 150 zombie movie rankings lists we have found online. Enjoy!

About Reel Fives Pre-launch Movie Rankings

While the Reel Fives website ( www.reelfives.com) is still in development we plan to begin producing rankings and ratings for films and movies within selected genres. The broader and functional reel fives website, will have a great deal of more functionality and rigor but in anticipation we plan to list preliminary rankings for movies based on their rankings or ratings across the web. We are calling these our pre-launch rankings. Similar to what is done in sports with preseason rankings for the teams in each league, we will in some ways predict how movies within genres will be ranked based on currently available rankings and ratings information and well as relevant movie reviews. Of course, once our Reel Fives flagship website www.reelfives.com is launched these might significantly change. If you have any suggestions on genres you would like to see ranked please leave us a comment here or in our open invitation posted in order to select the third genre rank.

The rankings are based on how many of the online rankings lists' top five each movie makes. When movie makes the same number of top fives we have tie-breaker rules, such as how high movies ranked in each list.

We consider the top movies for each genre those movies that made the top five for at least one list we found through our exhaustive online rankings search. Movies that did not make at least one top five are not included in top movies. We will update the lists in the near future to reflect newer movies that have been released and aught to be there.

Introduction to Reel Fives

About Reel Fives:
Reel Fives, formerly rocking potatoes, is a movie rating and ranking aggregator as well as a source for film news. Our goal is to identify the best and top movies in each film genre, or in other words, the best film for each category of movies.  We use a different type of aggregation than most ratings sites, which we are currently developing, called the top five rating system. Reel Fives is therefore is a compilation of top 5 movies. We hope to include broad movie and film genres such as drama, comedies, and science fiction to more specific genres such as kung fu movies, zombie movies, space movies, time-travel movies, horror comedies, buddy comedies, romcoms, robot movies, superhero movies, and create feature movies and will include news and new rankings and ratings information through these. In addition we will also be providing the relevant information on current movies in theaters. This will be a great place to find best movies in each of these genres. Our flagship site, www.reelfives.com, is still under development in collaboration with custom exposure, a Miami-based software and product development company. In the mean time, we are posting our content on our old rocking potatoes blog site. During this development stage please feel free to provide suggestion, as we will be very receptive!
