Welcome to our Reel Fives pre-launch movie rankings for the best baseball movies of all time. The rankings for baseball movies are based on our pre-launch rankings for its parent genre, sports movies, which captures sports film more broadly. Movie rankings of the top baseball movies are based on the 130 movie ranking sources we found for sports movies. In the list of sports movies there were 105 movies and of those movies 17 were baseball movies- these 17 baseball films are ranked below. As with the broader sports genre, baseball movie rankings are based on rankings created by movie experts as well as rankings from polling sites that were found online, such as ranker.com.
Baseball
is America’s sport and baseball movies show baseball’s hold on the American
dream. Children and adults can relate to playing baseball at some point in
their lives. This genre is popular and it is no surprise that baseball has a
longer list than the other sports subgenres. Field of Dreams (1989), the all-time best baseball movie (and
ranked fourth for sports movies), stars Kevin Costner as Ray Kinsella, an Iowa
farmer who builds a baseball field in the middle of a cornfield for the Chicago
White Sox because of a message only he is able to hear. While the idea is
far-fetched, the movie remains a classic because it rests on the hopes of a
child within a man. Bull Durham (1988),
ranked second (fifth for overall sports movies), also stars Kevin Costner, this
time as a minor league pitcher who gets involved with a woman who herself is involved
with a young pitcher he is supposed to mentor. This baseball story also has
qualities of a romantic comedy in this sense. Baseball loves an underdog and The Natural (1984), ranked third,
provides that. An unknown surprises everyone and becomes a baseball legend in
the film. Finally, The Sandlot (1993),
ranked fourth, does not involve professional baseball players. Instead,
baseball goes back to its roots: the neighborhood. The Sandlot (1993) is also a story of underdogs and childhood
adventure. There are also serious baseball movies on the list, such as Moneyball (2011) (ranked seventh), but
baseball movies on a whole are more about playing a simple game, not the
business aspect. That is what makes baseball movies compelling and why baseball
movies will remain classics for years to come.
