Best Basketball Movies of All Time -Based on 130 Published Rankings

Top basketball movie of all time
Scene from Hoosiers (1986) ranked top basketball movie of all time.

Welcome to our Reel Fives pre-launch movie rankings for best basketball movies of all. The rankings for basketball movies are based on our pre-launch rankings for its parent genre, best sports movies, which captures sports movies more broadly. The movie rankings of top basketball movies are based on the 130 movie ranking sources we found for sports movies which can be seen in our page for best sports movies. The sports movie rankings included 105 movies and of those movies 10 were basketball movies- these 10 basketball films are ranked below. As with the broader sports genre, these basketball movie rankings are based on rankings created by movie experts as well as rankings from polling sites that were found online.

Basketball can be played on a street court, beach court, or small town gym. No matter where the game is played, the essence of the sport remains the same: to reach greatness. Hoosiers (1986), the all-time best basketball movie, takes an unknown small town team to the championship game. Like other sports movies, basketball movies focus on the challenges of the journey to the championship or the pros. Hoop Dreams (1994), ranked second, follows two teens from Chicago who hope to be pro basketball players. This basketball film, also the top ranked documentary, captures the realities of sports without a script. Basketball is more than layups, it is suicide drills, hours practicing on the court, watching film, and dedication to perfect the craft of basketball. Glory Road (2006), ranked seventh, not only shows the tolls of the suicide drill on the players, but also the dedication of the players to keep pushing themselves. Basketball does not shy away from the topic of race. White Men Can’t Jump (1992), ranked ninth, addresses racial stereotypes. Billy Hoyle (Woody Harrelson) and Sidney Deane (Wesley Snipes) team up to hustle on the beachside courts. They use Hoyle’s deceptive demeanor to not appear threatening and together they play with substantial amounts of cash on stake.
